Summer Solstice

夏至 (Xià Zhì)
Date Window June 20–22
Organ Resonance heart, small intestine
Primary Element fire
Qi Phase Yang is at Peak (阳极之至)

The Summer Solstice represents the longest day of the year and the absolute peak of Yang energy in nature. From this point forward, although the hottest summer days are still ahead, the days will begin to shorten, signaling the subtle, initial rebirth of Yin energy. In the human body, this extreme peak of Yang directly affects the Heart and Small Intestine, requiring care to prevent Heart fire from burning out of control.

With Heart Yang at its maximum, the mind and spirit (Shen) can easily become overstimulated, leading to irritability, restlessness, or insomnia. Because this is the transition point where Yin begins to emerge, it is critical to protect this fragile, newly sprouting Yin energy. Staying up late at night depletes Yin and makes it difficult for the body to cool itself. Similarly, consuming iced coffee can disrupt digestion, shock the Spleen Yang, and agitate the Heart, creating a state of internal heat and cold confusion.

Cultivating calmness is the primary goal during the Summer Solstice. Practices like cooling Qigong focus on slow, flowing movements and exhaling with soft sounds to release excess heat from the chest. Drinking matcha provides a refreshing, cooling effect that clears mental heat and sharpens focus. Adding lotus seeds to your meals helps soothe the nervous system and nourish the Heart. By aligning with the natural transition of the solstice, we allow our internal energy to gently shift from peak expansion toward inner stillness.
