Beginning of Summer
Beginning of Summer marks the official arrival of the summer season, representing a transition from the growing phase of spring to the peak expansion of summer. In traditional Chinese medicine, this corresponds to the Fire element, a time when the Yang energy in nature is highly active, bright, and expansive. In our bodies, this external heat mirrors a surge in Heart Qi, making it the most important season for nourishing the Heart.
The Heart and its paired organ, the Small Intestine, are highly sensitive to the heat of summer. The Heart houses the Shen (spirit and mind) and governs the blood vessels. When Yang energy peaks, the Heart must work harder to circulate blood and regulate temperature. If the Heart becomes overheated or depleted of fluids, symptoms like restlessness, insomnia, anxiety, and palpitation can occur.
Preserving the body’s internal cool is the primary focus during this transition. It is best to avoid extreme workouts that cause heavy sweating, as sweat is considered the “fluid of the Heart” and its excessive loss can deplete Heart Qi. Similarly, cold showers should be avoided, as the sudden cold constricts blood vessels and shocks the active Yang energy. A brief afternoon nap of fifteen to thirty minutes is highly beneficial for resting the Heart. Incorporating lotus seeds into meals helps calm the Shen and nourish the Heart, while matcha provides a clean, cooling source of antioxidants and mental clarity.
