Major Snow
Major Snow brings freezing temperatures and heavy snow accumulations across the land. Yin energy reaches a very high level, while the body’s Yang energy is buried deep within the core, working hard to keep the organs warm. During this solar term, protecting the Kidney and Bladder is critical. Cold drafty rooms can easily sap the body’s precious Yang Qi, leaving the lower back, knees, and feet vulnerable to cold and stiffness.
Because the body is focusing its energy inward, our lifestyle must reflect this need for conservation. Engaging in intense cardio workouts that cause heavy sweating should be avoided. In traditional Chinese medicine, sweating during the winter months vents the precious Yang Qi and fluids that the body needs to store, potentially weakening the immune system. Keeping your living space warm and draft-free is essential to protect the exterior channels of the Bladder meridian, which runs down the back.
Supporting the body’s core warmth during Major Snow involves simple, warming practices. Spinal warming, such as placing a warm pack along the spine (the Du meridian, which governs all Yang Qi), helps distribute warmth throughout the body. Eating black sesame seeds nourishes the Kidney Yin and blood, supporting bone and hair health. Drinking hot ginger-jujube tea stimulates circulation, dispels cold, and keeps the digestive center warm, ensuring the body has the strength to withstand the deep cold.
