Qi Phase Yang is at Peak (阳极之至)

Major Heat is the hottest solar term of the year, characterized by scorching temperatures and stifling humidity. The Yang energy in nature reaches its ultimate peak, and the landscape is saturated with damp-heat. In human biology, this extreme climate tests the Spleen and Stomach, as the excessive heat drains our Qi and dries up our essential body fluids, leaving us vulnerable to exhaustion and heatstroke.

During Major Heat, the Spleen’s ability to transport and transform fluids is severely challenged by the external humidity. The body’s internal digestive fire actually retreats inward to protect the core, leaving the stomach relatively cold and weak. Consuming ice-cold draft beer or iced drinks during this time provides a temporary sensation of coolness but shocks the Stomach Yang, locking in dampness and causing digestive distress. Avoiding the intense midday sun is crucial to protect the body’s Yin fluids and prevent heat exhaustion.

Staying healthy during Major Heat requires a balance of clearing heat and protecting internal warmth. Practicing slow Qigong helps move Qi and release excess heat without causing heavy sweating, which would further deplete the Heart and Kidney fluids. Drinking matcha is an excellent way to clear heat from the head and support focus. Consuming fresh ginger in warm meals protects the Stomach Yang from cold damage and helps the body process the heavy humidity of the season.
