Frost Descends

霜降 (Shuāng Jiàng)
Date Window October 23–24
Organ Resonance lung, large intestine
Primary Element metal
Qi Phase Yin is Rising (阴气渐长)

Frost Descends is the final solar term of autumn, serving as the bridge to winter. During this time, temperatures drop near freezing, and frost begins to appear on plants and the ground. The active, warm Yang energy of summer has now retreated deep into the earth and the core of our bodies, while the cold, quiet Yin energy dominates the external world. In human health, the focus remains on the Lungs and Large Intestine, with a strong emphasis on protecting the body from the combination of cold and dryness.

As the weather turns cold, the Lungs are particularly vulnerable to dry, freezing air, which can cause respiratory issues, dry skin, and constipation. Protecting the body’s exterior is vital during this term. Wearing thin clothing or exposing the body to the cold morning dew can weaken the Wei Qi (protective energy), allowing wind-cold pathogens to penetrate the joints and respiratory tracts.

To maintain balance during Frost Descends, focus on warming practices and foods. Engaging in warm stretching exercises in the morning helps gently mobilize the joints and circulate Qi and blood, counteracting the contracting effects of the cold. Consuming walnuts is highly beneficial, as they warm the Lungs and Kidneys and moisten the large intestine. Drinking aged black tea helps warm the middle burner, protects the stomach, and promotes comfortable digestion, easing the transition into the colder winter months.
