Pure Brightness
Pure Brightness, or Qingming, is a season where the natural world becomes clean, bright, and vibrant. The air is fresh, plants are budding, and the earth feels revitalized. Historically, this term is also a time of remembrance and ancestral respect. Energetically, this period offers a profound opportunity to clear out the old, stagnant accumulations of winter and invite fresh, clean energy into the body.
This solar term focuses on the relationship between the Lungs and the Liver. The Lungs are responsible for bringing in fresh celestial Qi from the air and dispersing it downward, while the Liver governs the smooth circulation of Qi and emotions. Because this season is closely tied to memory and remembrance, feelings of grief or sorrow can easily arise. In traditional Chinese medicine, chronic sorrow directly weakens Lung Qi, causing chest tightness, shallow breathing, and low immunity.
Nourishing yourself during Pure Brightness involves keeping both physical and emotional channels clear. Deep breathing practices outdoors are highly beneficial for expanding Lung capacity and purging stale energy. Consuming lotus seeds helps calm the spirit and support the Spleen, while chrysanthemum and goji tea relaxes the Liver and brightens the vision. Protecting the chest and neck from sudden cold spring winds is essential to prevent wind pathogens from entering the lungs.
