Goji Berry
Goji berries are widely celebrated in traditional Chinese medicine as a longevity tonic. Long before they were labeled a “superfood” in the West, they were consumed daily in Asia to support the lower body reserves and maintain clear, sharp vision.
Traditional TCM Logic
Goji berries have a neutral thermal nature and a sweet flavor. They enter the Liver and Kidney meridians. In TCM, the Kidneys store the body’s deep reserve essence (Jing), while the Liver stores Blood and rules the eyes.
Because goji berries gently tonify Kidney Jing and Liver Blood, they address the root cause of chronic tiredness, blurry vision, dry eyes, and soreness in the lower back. Since they are neutral and sweet, they nourish fluids without drying the body or causing digestive heat.
Daily Wellness Application
Goji berries are dry and fibrous when raw. They are best enjoyed after they have been rehydrated in heat.
- Classic Eye Tea: Combine 10 goji berries with a few dried chrysanthemum flowers. The chrysanthemum clears toxic heat from the eyes, while goji rebuilds the moisture. This is the classic brew outlined in the Chrysanthemum & Goji Protocol.
- Steep and Chew: Steep a tablespoon of goji berries in hot water. Drink the water, and be sure to eat the rehydrated berries afterwards to get the full benefits.
- Nourishing Stews: Throw a handful of goji berries into chicken broth or bone soup during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
